Analytical chemistry, in its most comprehensive definition, encompasses the principles and applications of chemical separation, identification, and quantification. This makes it an essential component of nearly every chemist's experimental work, irrespective of their specialization. For numerous professionals, analytical chemistry represents a dedicated field of expertise. At Michigan State University, the discipline extends well beyond standard undergraduate coursework to incorporate thorough examinations of chemical systems and processes. This scope includes not just compositional analysis but also investigates chemical interactions in equilibrium states, structural determinations, reaction kinetics and mechanisms, system-measurement interactions, error analysis, and more.
Numerous analytical chemists focus on chemical systems due to their theoretical, industrial, or biological significance. These researchers often share common ground with physical, organic, inorganic, and biochemists. Others who specialize in enhancing measurement techniques delve deeply into optics, electronics, automation, and the physical chemistry of measurement systems. Ultimately, it proves to be an immensely rewarding branch of chemistry for those fascinated by experimental processes and scientific exploration. According to an independent evaluation, Michigan State University's analytical chemistry program ranks among the nation's elite. Our distinguished faculty of internationally recognized analytical chemists collaboratively maintains a dynamic, contemporary graduate program. Highlights include a robust curriculum within an adaptable study framework, diverse research opportunities, projects blending analytical with other chemistry disciplines, state-of-the-art facilities, valuable teaching experience, and strong financial backing. Students holding bachelor's degrees, or master's degrees or the equivalent, may be admitted for study at the doctoral level on either a provisional or regular basis. Applicants are expected to have had in their undergraduate programs one year each of general, analytical, organic, and physical chemistry, one year of physics, and one year of calculus or their equivalents. Deficiencies in the undergraduate program must be removed. Admission to the doctoral program is dependent on having a 3.00 or better gradepoint average and upon satisfactory performance on the qualification examinations given in the areas of analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. The qualification examinations will be waived for students who score at the 75th percentile or higher on the Graduate Record Examination Subject Test in Chemistry.
