The vocal arts program upholds the utmost standards of excellence in diverse fields such as general music, composition, music education, and performance, providing performance chances to all voice students regardless of their degree path.
With intimate class sizes and a 12:1 student-faculty ratio, each vocal arts student gets personalized guidance crucial for top-tier achievement. Every vocal arts instructor actively performs and specializes in specific performance styles. This enables students to gain expert training in various areas, including art songs, oratorios, opera, musical theater, contemporary music, diction, vocal techniques, and teaching approaches. Faculty conduct their own studio sessions, while students showcase their work during weekly vocal recitals. Participants present both required and optional recitals and can audition for solo parts in choirs or roles in MSU Opera productions. Additional skill-building opportunities exist through MSU jazz groups, the contemporary ensemble Musique 21, and symphony orchestras. The MSU-China Vocal Initiative allows students to work with Chinese choral performers, artists, and producers during an immersive three-week program featuring global performances, travel, and cultural exchange. Qualified applicants are automatically evaluated for merit-based music scholarships. Graduate candidates may qualify for vocal arts assistantships, fellowships, and awards without needing separate applications.
