The percussion program at Michigan State University empowers students to discover their individual talents by combining studio instruction, academic coursework, and performance experiences that foster artistic creativity. Guided by faculty members with extensive performance backgrounds and exceptional teaching skills, the MSU percussion department nurtures students' ability to develop, innovate, and excel.
The percussion studio brings together students from diverse cultural and musical backgrounds. With around twenty-five members, the studio includes undergraduate music majors specializing in performance, education, and composition, along with graduate students pursuing master's degrees, performance diplomas, and doctoral studies. This vibrant community welcomes students focusing on various aspects of music at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Performance opportunities include cutting-edge facilities at MSU and throughout the College of Music. Every studio member has the chance to join the MSU Percussion Ensemble, a chamber group dedicated to exploring both contemporary and traditional works. The ensemble has showcased its talent at prestigious events like the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, and Blue Griffin Recital Series. The group frequently collaborates with and learns from renowned visiting artists.
