The French major is perfect for students passionate about reading, writing, and exploring diverse cultures. By combining literature, language, cultural studies, and arts from French-speaking regions, this program helps students refine their French proficiency while exploring subjects ranging from literary analysis to avant-garde art, modern French philosophy, cinema, and graphic novels. The department encourages participation in faculty-led study abroad opportunities in Dijon and Paris.
French majors engage in critical analysis of French and Francophone literature and culture while mastering advanced communication skills in French. They explore varied cultural perspectives, ideologies, and philosophies through in-depth discussions of stories, poetry, films, and other media. The program typically begins with introductory or intermediate language courses, along with FRE 131 Masterpieces of French Culture in Translation. Our curriculum blends French and Francophone language and cultural studies with interdisciplinary methods and diverse critical viewpoints tied to faculty research. Students can pursue independent research through the French Honors track, enabling top performers to undertake focused projects on contemporary scholarly debates, or through our combined BA/MA program.
