This discipline focuses on how the public, institutions, and other elements shape America's political system. While our faculty have diverse research interests, we collectively prioritize practical representation issues, conducting studies to enhance democratic governance and policy formation. Students explore fundamental concepts and methods through a year-long American Politics seminar and specialized second-year courses. We strongly recommend complementing these with the department's exceptional quantitative methods program. Unique research opportunities include the Public Opinion Research Training Lab (PORTL), where students create and implement original surveys, and the Political Experiments Research Lab (PERL), offering hands-on experimental design experience. Key research areas encompass public attitudes, political behavior, electoral systems, legislative processes, and advanced survey techniques.
