MIT's Master of Science (SM) in Operations Research program equips students with essential OR methodologies, focusing on real-world implementation through a blend of demanding coursework and practical research.
Beyond meeting writing proficiency standards, our intensive program requires seven graduate-level classes covering optimization, applied probability, statistics, and specialized OR topics tailored to your professional aspirations. Degree completion demands 66 credit units, with a minimum of 42 credits in advanced coursework.
Students translate academic concepts into real applications by developing a thesis through independent research supervised by faculty advisors. Before graduating, candidates present their findings to the Operations Research Center community.
After completing this two-year program, graduates emerge prepared to apply their expertise across diverse sectors like business, academia, and research. Our alumni frequently secure roles as technical specialists in corporations, government strategists, and independent consultants.
To be admitted as a regular graduate student, an applicant must have earned a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standing. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor’s degree is awarded before they enroll at MIT.

We strongly encourage international applicants from non-English speaking countries to take the IELTS, with a minimum score of 7.
