The ORIE M.Eng. program, spanning two to three semesters, has gained significant market recognition and remains a compelling choice for qualified undergraduates in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Mathematics, Finance, and various other quantitative fields. Each MEng program at Cornell aims to expand students' technical expertise while offering practical applications of this knowledge. In ORIE, the core technical skills focus on mathematical modeling and quantitative methods rooted in optimization, probability, stochastic processes, statistics, and simulation. While these tools have nearly endless applications, ORIE students typically use them to enhance the design, operation, and efficiency of business systems.
A key feature of the ORIE M.Eng. program is the team-based engineering design project, supervised by a Cornell faculty advisor. Unlike conventional coursework or individual thesis work, this capstone project prepares students for professional careers through hands-on, client-sponsored initiatives involving real-world data, deadlines, and deliverables. Students, regardless of their specialization, take active roles in every project phase—from problem definition and analysis to client management, timeline oversight, and final presentation of results.
