Human Factors Engineering and Ergonomics (HFEE) focuses on creating jobs, machinery, operations, and workspaces that align with human abilities and constraints. Professionals in this field, working within industrial or government settings, utilize current knowledge about human performance to improve equipment design while also conducting new experiments to inform these designs. Core studies involve examining established research, design principles, and assessment techniques relevant to HFEE. Specialized courses cover sensory ergonomics (human sensory strengths and weaknesses), physical ergonomics (biomechanics and work physiology), cognitive ergonomics (how humans process information), and macroergonomics (team dynamics). Students also engage in research across diverse HFEE applications such as sound-based communication, digital interfaces, workplace safety, instructional methods, and transit systems. The program highlights targeted coursework, electives tailored to individual interests, and hands-on laboratory research supervised by HFEE faculty.
