Mechanical engineering focuses on the ethical creation of products, systems, and energy solutions, spanning from molecular levels to vast, intricate infrastructures. The principles of mechanical engineering play a role in every phase—from ideation to production—of any manufactured item containing moving components. Breakthroughs shaping humanity's future often originate from the realms of mass, motion, forces, and energy—the core domains of mechanical engineers. As one of the most diverse engineering disciplines, mechanical engineering's breadth is evident in the expanding scope of the Mechanical Engineering Department (MechE), which has grown significantly in recent years. Faculty members now engage in diverse initiatives, such as engineering durable hydrogels, employing nanostructured surfaces for water purification and microelectronics cooling, advancing robust design techniques, constructing terrestrial and aquatic exploration robots, formulating autonomous optimization algorithms, pioneering self-driving vehicles, designing affordable solar cells, innovating thermal and electrical storage solutions, utilizing acoustics to study Jupiter's moon oceans, analyzing fish biomechanics for underwater sensors, modeling metastatic cancer progression, creating groundbreaking medical tools, experimenting with nanoscale and large-scale 3D printing, and engineering non-adhesive surface coatings. To earn any of these three degrees, students must complete 72 graduate-level credits and submit a thesis.
