The Master of Science in Building Technology (SMBT) offers graduate students a specialized focus on advancing and implementing cutting-edge building technologies. Participants in this program study core engineering principles alongside courses that directly apply these concepts to architectural structures. The program welcomes applicants with bachelor's degrees across various engineering fields, physical sciences, or architecture (provided they have sufficient technical training). Students enter with diverse professional backgrounds, ranging from designing building climate control systems to international service experience. What unites them is a strong passion for building systems and a solid foundation in mathematics, physics, and technical disciplines.
Every SMBT student participates in a research initiative, which forms a crucial component of their educational journey. These projects allow students to explore and develop innovative technologies for building applications. Research topics typically align with ongoing investigations conducted by interdisciplinary teams from Architecture, Civil Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering departments, or under the guidance of individual faculty members. These projects, often funded by industry partners and government agencies, satisfy the program's thesis requirement while providing valuable exposure to real-world challenges in the building sector through collaboration with practicing professionals.
To be admitted as a regular graduate student, an applicant must have earned a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standing. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor’s degree is awarded before they enroll at MIT.
The minimum score required for the IELTS is 7 and the minimum TOEFL score is 600 (250 for computer-based test, 100 for Internet-based test). While either test score is accepted, the IELTS score is preferred.
