The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science allows eligible MIT undergraduates to pursue one of three Master of Engineering (MEng) options. These programs require an extra fifth year of study following completion of one of the department's Bachelor of Science degrees. PhD candidates must actively engage in the department's academic activities and produce thesis research that makes a meaningful contribution to their field. MIT students in the Master of Engineering program for Electrical Engineering and Computer Science must successfully finish this program as prerequisite preparation. Applicants with external bachelor's degrees but no master's degree typically need to fulfill the Master of Science requirements, which include submitting a thesis. Those who've earned a master's degree from another institution without substantial research work must complete research equivalent to a master's thesis before advancing to doctoral studies.
To be admitted as a regular graduate student, an applicant must have earned a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standing. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor’s degree is awarded before they enroll at MIT.
