The PhD in electrical engineering is granted based on demonstrated research excellence resulting in an original dissertation that advances knowledge in the field.

Graduate studies are available across six specialized disciplines:

control systems
power and energy systems
electromagnetic fields, antennas, and microwave circuitry
digital and mixed-signal circuit engineering
photonics and solid-state electronics
communication systems and signal processing

Arizona State University's School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering maintains a robust research initiative in digital and mixed-signal circuit design. The program features five advanced undergraduate courses plus more than 10 graduate courses in this specialization. This interdisciplinary effort involves faculty from the Connection One Research Center, WinTech, and the Center for Solid-State Electronics Research (CSSER).

Through partnerships with semiconductor companies and government organizations, these centers have developed cutting-edge educational programs covering VLSI design, circuit modeling, mixed-signal systems, and RF integrated circuit development.
