Consistently recognized as premier, our PhD program leads the nation in graduate economics education. Students collaborate directly with renowned faculty to cultivate original research and position themselves to drive meaningful advancements in economics.
Each academic year, we admit 20-24 full-time doctoral candidates who typically earn their degrees within five to six years. The curriculum includes foundational studies in microeconomic theory, macroeconomics, and econometrics, requiring completion of two primary and two secondary economics specializations. Outside formal coursework, PhD candidates partner with professors to refine their research skills through practical engagement in both theoretical and applied projects. Alumni of our program secure faculty positions at top-tier economics departments and professional schools, or launch impactful careers with global organizations and corporations.
To be admitted as a regular graduate student, an applicant must have earned a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standing. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor’s degree is awarded before they enroll at MIT.
