The Department of Biological Engineering provides PhD and ScD programs in Biological Engineering, with identical requirements for both degrees. This doctoral program trains students to apply engineering methodologies to study and modify biological systems, enabling solutions for diverse real-world challenges. The program's interdisciplinary nature deeply integrates engineering and biological sciences, transcending conventional engineering boundaries.
Students complete the written portion of doctoral qualifying exams, covering core coursework, following their second semester. Research advisors are typically chosen by the spring term of the first year, with research commencing before year's end. The oral qualifying exam, centered on the student's research focus, must be completed by December 1 of the third year. The entire doctoral process, including thesis completion, generally requires about five years of residency. Graduates receive either a PhD or ScD in Biological Engineering upon fulfilling all program requirements.
To be admitted as a regular graduate student, an applicant must have earned a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standing. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor’s degree is awarded before they enroll at MIT.
The minimum score required for the IELTS is 7 and the minimum score for TOEFL is 90 (iBT).
Waivers of TOEFL/IELTS may be available.
