Harvard-MIT's Health Sciences and Technology (HST) Medical Sciences Program awards an MD degree from Harvard Medical School, catering to students with exceptional aptitude in quantitative sciences, particularly biology, physics, engineering, and chemistry. This interdisciplinary curriculum in human biology results from collaborative efforts between Harvard and MIT faculty across medicine, life sciences, physical sciences, and engineering. The program offers flexible study plans tailored to each student's academic goals. Participants can enhance their HST coursework with specialized advanced studies in their chosen fields, either as part of the MD requirements or through combined MD/master's or MD/PhD degree pathways. Following Harvard Medical School's standard structure, HST MD candidates complete two years of clinical rotations at affiliated hospitals. With its focus on training physician-scientists with robust scientific foundations and interdisciplinary research capabilities, HST mandates thesis research for MD candidates while encouraging additional investigative work. For students seeking extended research experience beyond the standard four-year MD program, options include pursuing a concurrent PhD or extending medical studies to five-plus years with intensive research training.
The HMS Faculty of Medicine accepts applications from current students in good standing and graduates of accredited colleges who:
Present evidence that their intellectual and personal credentials are of such quality as to predict success in the study and practice of medicine
Demonstrate aptitude in the biological and physical sciences during their undergraduate years, but not to the exclusion of the humanities and social sciences
Supplemented their education with at least one year of college or university training in the United States or Canada if they have completed academic work outside the United States or Canada. Foreign students who do not have a baccalaureate or advanced degree from an institution in the United States or Canada are rarely accepted for admission.
Demonstrate fluent and nuanced facility in English, as effective communication among the medical care team and between physicians and patients is crucial to the delivery of care
