The AeroAstro department provides Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) programs focused on specialized research within a concentrated field. Prospective students can find details about the doctoral admission process in the Admission Requirements section earlier in this document. To earn the doctoral degree, candidates must complete a tailored curriculum, develop and defend a thesis proposal, and ultimately present and defend an original research-based dissertation.
Once admitted to the doctoral program, students work with their thesis advisor to choose a research specialization and assemble a thesis committee. This committee guides the candidate's academic and research trajectory while overseeing their advancement. The primary requirement for obtaining the doctoral degree is proving the ability to conduct pioneering research in aerospace engineering. The completed thesis, which showcases this expertise, must be defended in an oral presentation before department faculty, who then decide whether to confer the degree.
