The Spanish and Portuguese languages and cultures hold significant influence across the Iberian Peninsula, vast regions of Africa, and much of Latin America from Mexico to the southern tip of Chile. These languages serve as official or national tongues in thirty nations, boasting more than 615 million global speakers. This extensive reach - along with approximately 35 million speakers in the United States - creates abundant opportunities to develop proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation. Exploring the Iberian origins of these widespread cultures and understanding their worldviews fosters deeper appreciation of their values and quest for identity. Pursuing a Spanish or Portuguese major offers a challenging, fascinating, and rewarding academic journey.
The Undergraduate Catalog serves as the authoritative guide for course prerequisites in the Portuguese Studies Secondary Major. Consult the link provided for additional details. Note that students must fulfill the requirements for a primary major in another discipline.
Students should complete any necessary 100- or 200-level Portuguese courses to prepare for PORT 321, based on their existing language skills. While PORT 321 marks the initial course counting toward the Portuguese major, not all incoming students will be prepared to take it during their first term.
