The environmental engineering major focuses on the sustainable stewardship of our environment and safeguarding public health through scientific and engineering methods. Students can opt to specialize in environmental engineering or select it as a concentration within the civil engineering major. As an environmental engineering student, you will gain the expertise and practical skills to remediate polluted wastewater, industrial byproducts, sediments, and airborne contaminants. You will master the fundamentals of water resources engineering to model, manage, and conserve lakes, rivers, and streams. You will apply sustainability and urban planning principles to preserve our planet. Environmental engineers operate at the intersection of physics, chemistry, and biology—for instance, examining how oxygen moves from the atmosphere into a river, the chemical behavior of dissolved gases, and how fish utilize dissolved oxygen. At Marquette, the environmental engineering program provides a solid grounding in various scientific disciplines. You will acquire the essential knowledge for designing systems related to water resources and supply, wastewater treatment and disposal, air quality management, and the handling of solid and hazardous materials. This preparation will position you advantageously in a competitive employment landscape.
