Marquette University offers two biology degree programs: biological sciences (biology) and biology for professional careers. The biology program positions students at the forefront of scientific discovery, employing cutting-edge technology to investigate fields like molecular medicine, ecological systems, genetic control of organism development, microbial functions, and cellular movement. Unlike many research institutions, Marquette ensures all biological sciences students complete at least three laboratory courses taught directly by professors rather than teaching assistants. Undergraduate biology students can conduct independent research projects in faculty-supervised labs and may present their work at academic conferences nationwide. The biological sciences program stands out for its adaptable curriculum, allowing students to focus on human biology through molecular and physiological studies or explore environmental sciences, botany, and microbial life. The second program option prepares College of Education students for careers as middle or high school biology teachers. Marquette also provides a unique 10-week paid summer research opportunity, enabling students to gain hands-on experience in specialized areas including microbiology, neurobiology, plant science, and vertebrate physiology.
