The Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy with a social justice focus cultivates in students the ability to think critically and constructively about pressing human concerns. Philosophy encompasses numerous specialized fields, with Social Justice being both historically significant and particularly pertinent to modern times and the University's core values.
This social justice concentration uniquely combines theoretical study with practical application. The philosophy department currently provides numerous robust undergraduate courses in this field, covering both fundamental theories of justice and its real-world applications in current sociopolitical environments. Courses in this program follow a thoughtfully designed progression, with instructors intentionally emphasizing Social Justice aspects within their subjects. For instance, the program's cornerstone will be a tailored version of PHIL 321, Ethics and Society, incorporating service learning elements similar to the Magis initiative, primarily for philosophy majors selecting this concentration. Additionally, the required capstone seminars for all philosophy majors (392-399) will be scheduled to guarantee sufficient focus on justice-related topics for those specializing in Social Justice.
