The Department's research initiatives have expanded considerably in the past decade. Faculty in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, bringing substantial academic and industry expertise, provide advanced research and graduate education options for students funded via research assistantships, teaching assistantships, or fellowships. Over the past five years, annual external research funding has consistently ranged from $3.5 to $4.5 million.
Mechanical Engineering professors cover diverse specializations, from established fields like mechanical systems (design & control), materials science & engineering, and thermal-fluid science to emerging areas such as micro/nano-systems and molecular engineering. Their research primarily focuses on Energy, Materials & Manufacturing, Aerospace, and Bio-Technology applications, supported by funding from federal agencies (NSF, NASA, DoD, DoE, NIH), state entities (Louisiana Board of Regents), national labs, and private industries. Faculty collaborate closely with graduate students on projects spanning conventional and innovative domains. Students participate in experimental, computational, and theoretical studies, with the flexibility to choose relevant courses across departments in coordination with their advisory committees. The department offers state-of-the-art laboratory resources, advanced equipment, and comprehensive computing facilities throughout LSU's campus. Graduates are well-equipped for careers in industry, academia, government agencies, and private organizations.
