The LSU Department of Physics & Astronomy provides a Master of Science program specializing in Health Physics. This graduate program prepares students for professional careers in health physics, equipping them to pass board certification examinations. Graduates with this specialization will be well-positioned for entry-level roles in health physics, while some may opt to further their studies through doctoral programs.
During their initial year, students focus on core health physics principles through coursework covering radiation detection, instrumentation, safety protocols, biological effects of radiation, and related subjects. In their second year, those pursuing the health physics track study applied nuclear science and radiation safety, gaining knowledge applicable to industries, medical facilities, research institutions utilizing radiation, or regulatory bodies overseeing radiation usage.
The health physics program requires students to conduct original research and produce a thesis in their final year. This research project concludes with both a public presentation and formal defense. The thesis findings are typically suitable for submission to respected scientific journals following peer review.
