The Department of Biological Sciences provides research-focused M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Biochemistry. Exceptional students often directly enroll in the Ph.D. track without obtaining a master's degree first. Ph.D. candidates must complete specialized coursework for comprehensive biochemistry training, deliver academic seminars, and pass qualifying and general exams. Additionally, doctoral students must conduct independent research, evidenced by published work and a dissertation. The M.S. program mandates a thesis along with 30 graduate credit hours, with at least 24 credits from coursework. A minimum of 50% of these credits must be from 7000-level or higher courses.
The biochemistry graduate programs in Biological Sciences equip students for careers in scientific research and academia. Departmental research spans diverse fields such as cellular and molecular biology, virology, plant biochemistry, enzymology, and the molecular biophysics of proteins, DNA, and carbohydrates.
