The Department of French Studies collaborates with the Center for French and Francophone Studies, a separate yet closely affiliated organization, to establish Louisiana State University's French program as a leader in researching French and Francophone literature, language, and cultures. This excellence has earned the CFFS the prestigious "centre d'excellence" designation from the French Embassy in the United States, a distinction awarded to just 15 U.S. university French programs. Our academic work highlights Louisiana's deep Francophone heritage while demonstrating French studies' influential role in European intellectual history. As part of Baton Rouge's vibrant community, LSU stands at a unique intersection of Francophone cultures, with our Cajun and Creole roots connecting us to France, Canada, Africa, and the Caribbean.
LSU's distinguished French program, combining the Department of French Studies and the Center for French and Francophone Studies, has achieved global acclaim for its pioneering research in North American French and Francophone literary and cultural studies. The program emphasizes Louisiana's Francophone linguistic and cultural legacy while upholding French studies' prominent position in European scholarly traditions. Based in Louisiana's capital city of Baton Rouge, the program occupies a strategic position within the Francophone world, maintaining cultural ties through Cajun heritage to Francophone Canada and through Creole history to France, Francophone Africa, and the Caribbean.
