Our undergraduate program caters to students pursuing majors in Physics and Astronomy or Medical and Health Physics, as well as those interested in a Physics minor. The standard curriculum begins with Calculus and General Physics courses, including lab work, during the first year. The second year typically involves studying differential equations, modern physics, and mechanics. As juniors and seniors, students can specialize in areas like Physics, Astronomy, Medical/Health Physics, Secondary Education, or pursue a Second Discipline minor.
For students opting for the second discipline concentration (per LSU catalog requirements):
Beyond core physics coursework, this path requires completing 24 credit hours outside the department. This concentration aims to provide in-depth study of another academic field alongside physics. Typically, these credits form part of another major's requirements, with courses being either lecture-based or combining lectures with labs. The department mandates that 12 of these credits be at the 3000 or 4000 level, including at least 6 credits at the 4000 level. Since course selections require departmental approval, prospective students should consult with the department to verify their planned coursework meets requirements.
