Civil engineers focus on planning, building, and preserving the essential infrastructure systems that support daily life, as well as engaging in land surveying and coastal erosion initiatives. Specialized areas encompass: material science (analyzing steel, concrete, wood, and paving materials), structural engineering (designing bridges, buildings, etc.), hydrology (managing waterways and flood control systems), transit planning (developing traffic networks and thoroughfares), soil mechanics (studying earthworks and foundation stability), and geospatial measurement (land surveying). Career opportunities range from employment with architectural firms or energy companies to public sector roles with agencies like state transportation departments or federal engineering corps.
