The Long Island University Master of Social Work (MSW) Program aims to develop skilled practitioners deeply rooted in social work's traditions, principles, and ethical foundations, equipped to serve diverse communities throughout New York City and other regions. A key aspect of professional practice involves working across disciplines. Our MSW graduates enter the field armed with comprehensive theoretical knowledge, social work ethics, and practical skills to make meaningful impacts.
The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) has accredited LIU's MSW Program, recognizing its commitment to educational excellence. This Brooklyn-based program operates in partnership with LIU's Post campus in Brookville, New York.
Our curriculum offers a structured approach to mastering both foundational and specialized social work practice. The generalist training covers core competencies including policy analysis, intervention methods, human development studies, research methodologies, cultural competency, ethical standards, and social advocacy - all reinforced through hands-on field placements.
During the advanced year, students enhance their expertise in psychosocial evaluations, organizational leadership, and culturally responsive interventions while focusing on a chosen specialization. Second-year field placements allow students to implement their concentrated knowledge and refined skills in real-world settings.
Only candidates who have earned an undergraduate degree are admitted to the master of social work degree program.
Advanced Standing
The Advanced Standing Program provides students who earned an undergraduate degree in social work from a CSWE accredited baccalaureate program, up to one full year of credit towards their MSW. The standard for acceptance under advanced standing is a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
