LIU Brooklyn provides a Master of Science in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program. This 46-credit course can be finished in seven semesters (fall, spring, and summer) through part-time enrollment. Upon graduation, FNP students qualify for New York State certification as family nurse practitioners and can pursue national board certification via recognized advanced practice nursing organizations (such as the American Nurses Credentialing Center and American Academy of Nurse Practitioners).
Family nurse practitioners manage both acute and chronic conditions for patients of all ages, including pediatrics, women's health, adults, and geriatrics. According to New York State's Modernization Act, after completing 3,600 clinical hours, nurse practitioners gain full autonomy to diagnose and treat patients without needing a formal physician collaboration agreement.
Family nurse practitioners address health issues across all life stages, from pediatric to geriatric care. In New York State, licensed nurse practitioners work independently alongside physicians but without direct supervision. After fulfilling the 3,600-hour clinical practice requirement, nurse practitioners no longer need collaborative agreements with physicians.
Applicants to the M.S. in Family Nurse Practitioner must meet the following requirements for admission.
