French is spoken across all five continents. As a key language in global diplomacy, it serves as either the primary or secondary language for numerous international bodies including the United Nations and European Union. Mastering French language and culture provides significant advantages for careers in fields like international relations, politics, journalism, African/Middle Eastern/North American studies, literature, and the arts. At Lehigh University, students can pursue French as either a major or minor. The major curriculum emphasizes language proficiency through developing both speaking and writing abilities while exploring French and Francophone cultural and literary traditions. We highly recommend that our majors and minors participate in study abroad programs for at least one semester.
