The monogastric nutrition teams provide in-depth training that integrates fundamental nutrition principles with practical research initiatives. Specialized programs cover swine, equine, and poultry nutrition, with K-State's swine nutrition program standing out as a national pioneer in applied field studies within contemporary commercial swine operations. Graduate students gain hands-on industry experience while performing cutting-edge research. Key study areas encompass amino acid and energy nutrition, alternative feed ingredient usage, how technological innovations affect dietary needs, and feed processing techniques' impact on nutrient absorption.
K-State's Equine Nutrition program boasts one of just two university-maintained herds of cecally cannulated horses, enabling graduate research on nutrient digestion, the microbiome of the equine hindgut, and cecal conditions.
The poultry program addresses both broiler and layer hen nutrition, along with gamebird dietary needs. Research focuses on feed processing methods and poultry nutrient requirements.
