Kansas State University has included landscape planning and design in its academic programs since 1871, initially making it mandatory for all students. The inaugural MLA degree was awarded in 1968. The program provides two pathways: The non-baccalaureate track welcomes students without prior degrees, enabling them to begin as undergraduates and advance toward the professional graduate landscape architecture degree. This MLA program holds full accreditation from the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board of the American Society of Landscape Architects. We view advanced landscape architecture education as combining rigorous traditional training with independent scholarly exploration. The curriculum emphasizes research as both a learning tool and a way to benefit communities. Our alumni work across diverse environments—from urban centers to rural landscapes, wilderness areas to international projects—in various professional settings including design firms, public agencies, academia, and interdisciplinary practices. K-State MLA graduates emerge as leaders advocating for responsible land stewardship and thoughtful human-environment interactions, pursuing sustainable solutions that balance ecological integrity, human welfare, and design excellence.
