Kansas boasts diverse commercial horticulture sectors, offering numerous opportunities for growers. According to the USDA, Specialty Crops include fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticultural products, and nursery crops (including floriculture). Among these, Kansas is well-suited for various tree fruits, berries, nuts, and vegetable crops, along with horticultural aspects of industrial hemp, commercial turfgrass (for sports fields, golf courses, sod, etc.), and ornamental nursery plants (trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals). The state's climate presents challenges such as alkaline soils, summer heat, winter cold, drought, strong winds, and limited water availability. Today, controlled growing systems are essential for successful production and extending the growing season for many specialty crops in Kansas.
Our Commercial Horticulture research team investigates both established and promising specialty crops for the region. For every crop, we study advanced pre- and post-harvest techniques alongside modern cultivation methods, utilizing cutting-edge facilities and technologies to optimize productivity. Additionally, we work to broaden the selection of landscape plants that can flourish in Kansas's varied growing conditions.
