Earning a Ph.D. requires completing 90 credit hours, distributed across core courses, minor studies, and research activities. Full-time students taking 12 credits per regular semester and 3 credits during summer can finish in slightly more than three years. The program offers a wide range of minor subject options and diverse research opportunities. Exceptional candidates may proceed directly to doctoral studies without first obtaining a master's degree. The Chemical Engineering Department has these additional requirements: Successful completion of designated courses, Passing a qualifying exam in Chemical Engineering fundamentals, Developing and orally defending a written thesis proposal, Producing and defending an approved dissertation, and Presenting research findings at a departmental seminar.
