The Peabody Piano Department's mission is to mentor and motivate talented young musicians, preparing them for professional careers as international representatives of their craft.
With a distinguished legacy spanning from Arthur Friedheim, a pupil of Franz Liszt, to the celebrated 60-year tenure of Leon Fleisher, and continuing with today's acclaimed artist-faculty, the Conservatory's Piano Department maintains its tradition of exceptional artistry. Over the years, numerous distinguished musicians have educated our students to excel both as performers and artists. Our faculty members, coming from varied backgrounds and training, share a profound dedication to nurturing our students' growth and success. While upholding our heritage of excellence, we are equally committed to equipping students for diverse career paths, which may encompass teaching at various levels and performing both classical and contemporary repertoire, whether as soloists or collaborative musicians. We also emphasize developing their communication skills with different audiences, along with the entrepreneurial and technological competencies essential for thriving as modern musicians.
The Piano Department at Peabody draws exceptional young artists from across the globe. Our students have triumphed in prestigious international competitions including the Busoni, Van Cliburn, Hamamatsu, Kapell, Marguerite Long, Montreal, Munich, Naumburg, New Orleans, American Pianists Association, Queen Elisabeth, Rubinstein, Tchaikovsky, International Chopin, Young Concert Artists, Sendai, Dublin, Hilton Head, San Jose International, and San Marino International.
