While epidemiologic research has grown more specialized in recent years, there's still a strong demand for general epidemiologists in both practical and research environments. These professionals need robust foundational knowledge of epidemiologic and statistical methods, along with a firm grasp of how health and disease dynamics operate in human populations.
The General Epidemiology and Methodology track provides comprehensive training for those pursuing careers as generalists or methodologists. Students can specialize in Advanced Methodology or Pharmacoepidemiology, or create a customized research path. Close collaboration with advisors helps tailor coursework to individual goals. The recommended courses include popular options from epidemiology, statistics, and bioscience disciplines. Any department faculty member can advise students in this track, with doctoral candidates in Methodology encouraged to consider the Biostatistics MHS program.
First-year students focus on mastering core coursework and passing comprehensive exams. Seminars and advisor meetings lay the groundwork for future research. Beyond classes, students participate in departmental seminars, Journal Club, and Research-in-Progress sessions addressing current methodological and research topics. Second-year students begin developing research projects with faculty mentors, many of whom direct prominent cohort studies like CKID, MACS, and WIHS. These faculty also collaborate on environmental biomarker research with Environmental Health Sciences colleagues.
