Environmental Epidemiology investigates how diseases relate to industrial and occupational exposures, along with environmentally triggered illnesses across broader populations. Researchers and students are currently studying gene-environment connections in cancer studies, air pollution impacts, radiation hazards, asthma prevalence in certain pediatric groups, and reproductive consequences from environmental factors. Additional departmental work focuses on risk assessment methodologies and tobacco's influence on particular demographic groups.
Beyond mandatory coursework, students must participate in monthly Environmental Epidemiology Journal Club sessions to facilitate dialogue about emerging topics among faculty and peers. These interdisciplinary gatherings promote knowledge sharing across multiple academic departments. The Journal Club proves especially valuable for students preparing for comprehensive examinations and helps advanced learners stay updated with contemporary field literature. Participants gain public speaking practice, exposure to cutting-edge research, and opportunities to hone critical analysis and scientific reasoning skills.
