The Spanish and Portuguese graduate program provides motivated, self-directed students with chances to pursue specialized advanced studies aligned with their academic passions. The program stands out for its adaptability and cross-disciplinary approach. Participants can focus on either Latin American or Iberian literary studies, or collaborate with advisors to craft personalized research initiatives incorporating diverse theoretical frameworks and additional languages/cultures. Past students have collaborated with professors across disciplines including art history, political science, philosophy, and other language departments like French, Italian, German, and Yiddish. The program guarantees five years of financial support, including fellowships in the first and either fourth or fifth years. Typically, students complete 12 graduate seminars within their initial five semesters, achieving ABD status by their third year. The second fellowship year usually involves overseas dissertation research. Hopkins offers numerous internal grant opportunities, and departmental options include summer research funding and a sixth-year writing fellowship.
