The PhD graduate program provides students with comprehensive knowledge of art history along with profound insights into research methodologies and theories in the field. It fosters collaborative learning through close student-faculty interactions in seminar settings. Each doctoral candidate receives guidance from a primary advisor in their specialization while maintaining strong connections with other department professors. Depending on their research focus, students frequently draw upon faculty knowledge from related disciplines. The curriculum encourages extensive engagement with exceptional art collections in the Baltimore-Washington region pertinent to each student's research interests. Beyond the remarkable resources of Johns Hopkins University's Sheridan Libraries (encompassing rare book collections at Garrett Library, Special Collections at Milton S. Eisenhower Library, and the George Peabody Library), graduate scholars can utilize prestigious collections and research institutions throughout Washington D.C.
