The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program is a full-time academic pursuit providing an interdisciplinary education customized to each student's focus on addressing critical environmental health and engineering challenges. The EHE PhD curriculum aims to equip graduates for scholarly work and professional application, fostering knowledge creation, research-driven solutions for environmental and public health improvement, and effective dissemination of findings. This program combines structured coursework with approximately four to five years of original dissertation research (formally termed a thesis in official documentation).
All Department PhD candidates complete a foundational curriculum alongside specialized track requirements and advanced courses in their chosen field.
Working closely with advisors, students design personalized study and research plans. Doctoral theses must present novel, publishable research approved by both the Department and a thesis review committee. Candidates must participate in primary data collection either as part of their dissertation work or through other research activities during their studies. These programs operate across two Johns Hopkins campuses: the Whiting School of Engineering at Homewood and the Bloomberg School of Public Health in East Baltimore, allowing students to access courses at both locations to fulfill degree requirements.
