Key research focuses within the department encompass structural engineering, mechanics of structures, probabilistic approaches, hazard mitigation, and systems engineering.
Whether designing bridges, skyscrapers, spacecraft, or medical implants, structural engineers create the internal frameworks that enable these structures to bear weight and function in diverse environments.
Faculty members pioneer innovative approaches to structural design that maximize efficiency, account for uncertainties, and ensure durability against various threats. The program excels particularly in seismic engineering, fire safety engineering, probabilistic structural mechanics, optimization techniques, and lightweight steel construction. Leveraging their knowledge of material behavior and civil engineering systems, faculty members work together to address some of the field's most pressing challenges.
