The Civil and Systems Engineering PhD program seeks to cultivate future leaders who will tackle the vital task of developing and maintaining society's critical infrastructure. Key research focuses encompass structural engineering, mechanics, probabilistic approaches, hazard mitigation, and systems engineering. Students employ computational and experimental modeling methods to work alongside pioneering collaborators, developing innovations ranging from aircraft engine design codes to advanced engineered materials.
The Mechanics of Materials (MoM) initiative offers an integrated research and learning environment focused on computational and experimental approaches to material and structural design. Faculty work with governmental and industrial partners on impactful research across diverse sectors such as aerospace, automotive, defense, manufacturing, biomedicine, and electronics, addressing challenges from aircraft engine design standards to machine learning applications. The program particularly focuses on analyzing and forecasting deformation, fracture, and fatigue characteristics in materials and structural systems.
