The Henry A. Rowland Department of Physics and Astronomy merges an exceptional research initiative, internationally acclaimed faculty, and cutting-edge facilities. Our teaching and research initiatives embody two longstanding Johns Hopkins traditions: a focus on graduate education and research, complemented by a robust undergraduate curriculum, along with the adaptability unique to a department of our scale.
Both our undergraduate and graduate programs are carefully structured to deliver fundamental core subjects at suitable levels, paving the way for specialized coursework across diverse fields. We actively promote independent learning beyond formal classes, including special projects and self-directed studies. This environment is further enriched by NASA's Space Telescope Science Institute—home to the Hubble Space Telescope—situated directly across from our campus.
