This program equips students for careers in fitness-related organizations including wellness facilities, medical centers, and rehab programs, while also providing a foundation for advanced studies in exercise science. Graduates qualify to enter the American College of Sports Medicine's fitness instructor certification program. Those considering physical therapy will find this concentration aligns well with Pre-Physical Therapy studies.
Students earn a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, specializing in either Exercise Science (ES) or Physical & Health Education Teacher Education (PHETE).
The ES track readies students for roles in fields like strength training, personal coaching, workplace wellness, and cardiac rehab. Numerous Exercise Science alumni opt for further education to enter healthcare professions such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant studies, and medical school.
Physical Education and Health candidates undertake a five-year combined bachelor's/master's program culminating in a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). After four years, they receive a BS in Kinesiology with a PHETE specialization. The MAT program commences post-graduation in May, and upon completion, graduates qualify for Virginia's PK-12 teaching certification in Physical and Health Education.
