Biotechnology applies biological systems and processes to address human challenges, typically through innovative products or tools. The Biotechnology Degree Program at JMU combines expertise from three core departments—Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Integrated Science and Technology—along with collaboration between the Colleges of Science and Mathematics and Integrated Science and Engineering. This creates a distinctive program offering both scientific rigor and interdisciplinary scope. Students engage in a demanding curriculum emphasizing three key elements: practical lab work, critical evaluation of biotech methods and principles, and adaptable skill-building for a dynamic industry. JMU's Biotechnology program is a four-year interdisciplinary major culminating in a B.S. degree, featuring intensive coursework with extensive lab practice, analytical thinking about biotech applications, and career-ready skill development. Graduates benefit from this dual focus on technical specialization and broad interdisciplinary training, preparing them for diverse opportunities in industry, government, and postgraduate studies.
