The Bachelor of Music is an advanced degree where over two-thirds of the required credits focus on musical studies. Aspiring musicians audition as singers or instrumentalists, committing to 3-4 years of private instruction (varies by specialization), involvement in ensembles for 7-8 terms, and presenting at least one formal recital alongside intensive music coursework.
JMU offers conservatory-quality training within the vibrant setting of a comprehensive liberal arts university. Music majors can specialize in one of six tracks: performance, composition, music business, music teaching, jazz performance, or musical theater. Alumni from the School of Music graduate with the complete skill set to convert their expertise into meaningful practice. Whether through instruction, performance, leadership, scholarship, or artistic creation, their work creates daily positive change in communities worldwide.
