The Bachelor of Arts in Music is a liberal arts program where around 45% of coursework focuses on musical studies. This flexible degree enables students to pursue their passions in music alongside other academic disciplines.
Admission to the Bachelor of Arts in Music requires an interview, with Music Industry applicants also submitting a portfolio. The curriculum blends mandatory and elective courses across music and general studies, including four semesters of ensemble participation and a faculty-mentored capstone project. While optional, students may audition for private vocal or instrumental lessons during the application process.
JMU offers conservatory-quality training within a comprehensive liberal arts environment. Music majors can specialize in one of six tracks: performance, composition, music industry, music education, jazz studies, or music theatre. Graduates leave with the skills to apply their musical expertise through teaching, performing, leadership, research, and creative work - making meaningful contributions to society daily.
