Social Justice examines and confronts systems of oppression, exploring the societal and historical factors that sustain inequality. This field advocates for fairness, diversity, analytical thinking, democratic values, and inclusion. It covers topics like race & ethnicity, women's & gender studies, LGBTQ+ issues, socioeconomic disparities, disability rights, and their intersections, mainly within the U.S. framework while connecting to global oppressive structures. Classes in this discipline can satisfy general education requirements in social sciences or contribute to an Associate of Arts in Social Justice for Transfer degree. Through Social Justice education, students gain insight into cultural and societal dynamics shaping human experiences. This knowledge base benefits those pursuing careers in law, business, education, healthcare, social services, government, or similar fields.
As required by SB1440 (section 66756), obtaining an AA-T in Social Justice Studies demands:
60 semester or 90 quarter units of qualifying coursework,
A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA,
At least a C grade (or Pass) in all major courses, and
Fulfillment of IGETC and/or CSU GE-Breadth requirements.
