To earn the paralegal studies certificate, students must complete 18 credits of specified legal coursework with grades of C- or higher. All mandatory courses listed in the program must be finished with at least a 2.0 GPA to qualify for the certificate. Before starting, applicants need to have finished (or be currently taking) 42 undergraduate credits from the University of New Haven or another accredited institution, meeting ABA standards. Following university transfer policies, only up to 9 of the required 18 credits can be transferred, and these must come from an ABA-approved paralegal program. Since 1971, the University of New Haven has offered this certificate program, educating both full-time and part-time evening students in paralegal studies. Paralegals work under attorney supervision, handling substantive legal tasks assigned to them, but cannot offer legal services directly to clients unless authorized by law.
