Faculty expect all students to achieve academic excellence by maintaining a minimum 3.0 GPA. Students must develop teamwork skills, design research/creative projects, and demonstrate strong written and oral communication abilities. Additionally, students should understand the social, professional, and ethical dimensions of their field.
Graduates of the AESHM program will develop expertise in four key competencies:
Critical Analysis: 1.Synthesize and assess research/creative work within and across disciplines. 2.Employ suitable research/creative methodologies. 3.Utilize theoretical frameworks effectively. 4.Adopt an interdisciplinary approach relevant to the field. 5.[PhD] Create original research/creative work that advances the discipline.
Personal Development: 1.Craft an individualized plan combining scholarship, professional experience, and teaching as needed. 2.[PhD] Articulate a professional teaching, research, and service philosophy.
Ethical Practice: 1.Examine and address ethical considerations in field-specific contexts. 2.Maintain integrity in scholarship and professional conduct.
Effective Communication: 1.Adapt and convey scholarly information to various audiences using multiple formats (written, oral, visual, digital).
Faculty particularly recommend that PhD candidates present at academic conferences like the Annual Graduate Education Conference in Hospitality and Tourism or the International Textiles and Apparel Association Meeting before completing their degree. Doctoral students are also advised to publish at least one article prior to graduation.
