The Animal Physiology Program offers comprehensive graduate studies across diverse physiological systems. Students can pursue a general Animal Physiology major or enhance it with specialized tracks including reproductive physiology, muscle biology, and animal ethology. Reproductive physiology research targets enhancing breeding efficiency in livestock like pigs, cattle, sheep, and horses. Muscle biology explores core characteristics of muscle proteins and their functions in muscle growth and food production. Ethology studies investigate farm animal behavior and welfare across different agricultural systems. While formal specializations aren't available for all interests, potential focus areas include neuroendocrinology, immunobiology, and fetal development. Cutting-edge research employs advanced biochemical, molecular biological, and microscopic techniques in facilities at Kildee Hall and the Molecular Biology Building. These spaces feature premium laboratories alongside animal housing, surgical suites, and analytical labs. The program benefits from direct access to research herds maintained at the Department's satellite farms.
